It is ideal for those at Sussex and Brighton Uni’s due to its proximity.

London Road

The London Road area is not as well-known outside Brighton as other parts of the city might be, but it has an interesting personality all its own and is well worth exploring to find those lesser-known gems.

Situated between the New England quarter, The Level and Preston Park, the London Road area has an arty, student vibe that gives it an intriguing edge other parts of Brighton don’t have. It has its own historic and eccentric landmark in the Duke of York’s picturehouse, the UK’s first purpose-built cinema, opened in 1910 and recognisable by a pair of stripy legs poking out from the roof. There are plenty of fashionable places to eat nearby if you want to squeeze in a bite to eat before the latest movie or a double bill of some classic oldies.

The Open Market is a must if you want to buy fresh produce, sample delicious street food, and soak up a sociable community atmosphere. Foodwise, you can find everything from vegan sushi to authentic Neapolitan-style pizza to Polish donuts in the area, with plenty of popular hidden restaurants tucked away in the back streets that locals are proud to have on their doorstep. One of Brighton’s first sustainable refill stores can be found on London Road, and for anyone keen to switch their shopping habits from buying brand new to buying second hand, then there are charity shops aplenty in the area, selling clothes, books, bric-a-brac and furniture

Kemptown

Stretching from east of the city centre to Brighton Marina, Kemptown oozes village charm, community spirit, inclusivity, sustainability, and fun. If Brighton is chill, then Kemptown is super-chill. While Brighton is known for having a strong LGBTQIA+ community, Kemptown is at the very heart of Pride celebrations every summer. In other words, you can’t get much more Brighton than Kemptown!

Described by Time Out magazine as “a boho-enclave within a boho-enclave”, it’s not surprising that Kemptown recently made it into Time Out’s Top 50 World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods! And it’s about to become even cooler as the seafront here has been the focus of an ambitious regeneration project in recent years. Plans to improve biodiversity and accessibility in the area are underway, as is the construction of a 50m heated outdoor swimming pool.

Another significant feather in Kemptown’s colourful cap is its vibrant nightlife scene. With clubs and bars along the seafront from Brighton Palace Pier to Yellowave Beach Sports Café, this is an area having way too much fun to sleep. But if you need a place to recover the morning after the night before, there’s no shortage of places to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by or gaze dreamily out to sea

Plus, with Queen’s Park just around the corner, there’s a great place to hang out nearby when the summer weather arrives. With free parking in the area and well sized properties, what more could you ask for.
